A New Perspective for 2021 / One Day At A Time

Nearly Happy New Year to you!

In December, the theme of my classes has been how to support our mental health, what we can do to develop our resilience and how to manage stress and anxiety.

I would like to end this year by sharing one piece of wellbeing advice that I have found the most useful in 2020.

“Do the next best thing…”

I keep coming back to it and at times of deep overwhelm and uncertainty, it has given me something solid and achievable to hold on to, simply to do the next best thing.

A new perspective

January is the busiest time of year for wellbeing businesses and usually, after Christmas, I am busy preparing classes, a new timetable and coming up with workshop ideas for the New Year.

This year I have decided to take a step back, change my perception of what I should be doing and allow 2021 to unfold day by day.

From the start of the March lockdown, there was a mad panic in the yoga industry with teachers making a dash online. The online yoga market became saturated and class prices were pushed lower, with recorded classes often offered for free on some platforms.

It was pretty exhausting trying to keep up with all the new admin and technology involved, not to mention disheartening when numbers began to fall off.

Rather than being sucked into comparisons on social media, I have decided not to chase busy-ness this year and just focus on the things that seem to be working! 

Mama Love Yoga in 2021

I have reduced my timetable to 2 livestream classes a week and will trust that if people want to come to my classes they will come.

The on demand library is growing if people cannot make live classes and there are also a few free videos on my Youtube channel. I have partnered with Lokah Lab to create wellbeing support retreats for mums with several dates next year. This is certainly not the plan I had for this year but it feels like it is going in the right direction.

I love learning and writing so I hope to do more study in 2021 and share the things that I hope will interest you too, rather than jumping on a bandwagon and trying to be everything to everyone. 

That doesn’t sit well or work, whatever your job is SO..

I am just going to do the next best thing every day and take it one day at a time, rather than overthinking and worrying about what might happen and what everyone else is doing.

I have no idea where 2021 will take me but I hope to see you along the way, on the yoga mat, massage table or on a retreat! 

Every morning I write in my journal and then take a few minutes to make a list of the next best things I can do that day, be it making a healthy lunch, finishing a course module or booking a class for myself.

It just makes life a lot simpler giving myself one achievable task at a time.

Do the next best thing

Where did you learn this golden nugget of advice, I hear you cry?

I have a mountain of wellbeing books by my bed, weighty learned tomes written by experts in their fields of psychology, gut health, yoga, massage therapy, addiction, stress and overwhelm.

I’ve completed several courses this year in bodywork, positive psychology and yoga.

So where did I find this advice?

Frozen bloody 2.

Yep, it even has a song about it.

“Just do the next right thing, Take a step, step again

It is all that I can to do

The next right thing

I won’t look too far ahead..”

Sums up 2020 really, when it all goes tits up you can always rely on Disney to pull you through.
