Stress relief for night waking

The 2am spiral

It’s 2am. You wake suddenly, your heart is racing, and your mind switches on as if you’ve had a strong coffee. Sleep feels impossible, and the more you worry about being awake, the more wired you become.

Sound familiar? You’re not alone – night waking is incredibly common, especially when stress, hormones, and busy lives collide.

Why we wake at night

Waking at night isn’t random. It’s often your body’s way of signalling something:

  • Stress or anxiety overstimulates the nervous system.
  • Hormonal changes (like perimenopause and menopause) can disrupt circadian rhythms.
  • Overstimulation from news, screens, or late-night scrolling keeps the brain “on alert.”
  • Blood sugar dips during the night may also trigger a stress response.

Your body isn’t failing you, it’s waving a little flag to say, something needs attention.

The power of reframing

Instead of spiralling into panic, what if you saw these wake-ups as a signal, not a failure? Your body is speaking to you.

Try this simple pause:

  • Notice your breath.
  • Feel the weight of your body on the mattress.
  • Let your attention drop into your chest or belly.

This is different from “just resting”, it’s active connection. Even if you don’t drift back to sleep immediately, you calm the nervous system and interrupt the spiral.

Somatic practices for better sleep

Sleep isn’t just made at night, it’s built during the day. Somatic practices help regulate the nervous system so your body isn’t already in “fight or flight” when you go to bed.

These might include:

  • Breathwork for calming the stress response.
  • Bodywork or massage to release stored tension.
  • Gentle yoga or mindful movement to ground you.
  • Massage, in particular, is a powerful sensory reset. Lying down, fully supported, with space to notice sensations, you strengthen your mind–body connection and give your system the chance to reset.

Supporting sleep and wellbeing

The more time you spend reconnecting with your body, the more resilient your nervous system becomes and the easier it is to meet those 2am wake-ups with curiosity instead of panic.
