What is somatic CBT

🌿 What Somatic CBT Is

Somatic CBT (Somatic Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) combines the psychological tools of CBT with body-based awareness.

While traditional CBT focuses on the mind,  our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, somatic CBT adds the body into the picture.

It recognises that our physical sensations often respond before our thoughts do: a racing heart, tight chest, tense jaw, or a sense of unease in the stomach. These are all messages from the body, helping us understand what’s happening beneath the surface.

🌬️ How It Works in Practice

In somatic CBT, we explore both mind and body together.

A session might include:

  • Breathwork to calm and regulate the nervous system.

  • Gentle movement or grounding to release stored tension.

  • Mind–body inquiry to notice where emotions live in the body.

  • Cognitive reflection to understand the link between thoughts, sensations, and behaviours.

By learning to listen to these signals, you can work with them instead of against them, helping you respond to stress or discomfort with more clarity and choice.

💫 Why It Matters

Somatic CBT helps you reconnect with your body as an ally rather than a problem to fix.

When you learn to tune in to your body’s cues, you can catch the early signs of stress, fatigue, or anxiety and take steps that bring balance faster.

As I often say in my work:

It’s about learning to listen to your body’s messages, so you can bring relief now, and build resilience for the future.
